  • I have forgotten my applicant ID, my password and/or my user name. What can I do?

Applicants who happen to have forgotten their self-defined password or user name can get help from the appropriate help function in the application window of the application portal. The password can be reset by providing the e-mail address and user name given at the time of registration. The user name can be recovered by providing the applicant ID and date of birth.

It is possible to change the password under the rubric "user account". Please note that the new password must fulfill certain criteria. The new password must contain capital and small letters, at least one digit and one symbol.

Please note that the self-defined access data is only for the application portal of hochschulstart.de, the portal for local admission-restricted courses of study, and not for application portals of higher education institutions.

  • My user name is not accepted, what can I do?

Please make sure that you have entered the user name correctly. Check that this is actually the valid user name for the application portal of hochschulstart.de, the portal for courses of study with a local admission restriction (DoSV). This is done by recovering the user name using the help function "Forgotten your user name". Please note that you receive a separate user name for each application portal. Your user name for an application portal of a particular higher education institution cannot be used for the application portal of the dialogue-oriented procedure and vice versa.

  • The activation link is no longer valid, what can I do?

In order to successfully complete your registration, a registration link is required. This is sent to you by e-mail after the completion of the application data in the application portal and it must be used once within the following 72 hours. If you have not used this link within this time span, please refer to the applicant support, by e-mail, providing your first name and surname, your date of birth and if available your applicant ID so that an activation link can renewed be sent to the e-mail address given in the user account.

  • I have received an e-mail informing me that my user account has been deleted, why?

A user account is deleted in the case of a disallowed multiple registration. Your application for courses of study in medicine, dentistry, veterinary, or pharmacy is not affected by this. When you have opened more than one user account in the procedure for local admission-restricted courses of study (DoSV) under hochschulstart.de then this is a case of multiple registration.

If there is more than one user account with active applications under your name, you will be informed by e-mail before the deletion by hochschulstart.de. Then you can decide which account should be removed from the procedure. If you do not respond to the e-mail within a certain time the older user account including all its applications will be deleted.

Please note that in case a user account is deleted also applications that you have submitted via uni-assist no longer participate in the procedure. Therefore please check which BID/BAN-combination relates to your uni-assist applications.

  • Where can I find the courses of study being offered by the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV)?

The higher education institutions themselves decide which courses of study participate in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV). These are not known to hochschulstart.de in advance. The courses of study being offered by the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV) are available in the application portal of hochschulstart.de for the winter term from about the end of April and for the summer term about the end of October. General information, plus information about further courses of study, can be found under www.hochschulkompass.de or under www.studienwahl.de.

  • Is a difference made between those who gained their Abitur in a previous year and those who have just gained theirs? Are there different deadlines?

There might be different deadlines for those, who gained their Abitur (qualification for admission to higher education) in a previous year. Whether or not a difference is made regarding the deadlines is determined solely by the higher education institution. Please ask directly at the chosen higher education institution.

  • Is it possible to apply under hochschulstart.de for a course of study in medicine, veterinary, dentistry or pharmacy and at the same time for a course with a local admission-restriction (for example Psychology or Law)?

The application for a nation-wide admission-restricted course of study for medicine, veterinary, dentistry and pharmacy is done under "AntOn", the application portal for courses of study with a nation-wide numerus clausus (NC).

The application portal of hochschulstart.de (DoSV) for courses of study with a local admission restriction can not be used for any of these four courses and vice versa "AntOn" cannot provide help concerning courses with a local admission restriction.

The two procedures are independent of each other.

An application for one of the above-mentioned courses has no influence on a possible application in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV) and further it has no affects on the number of applications allowed in DoSV.

It is possible to receive an admission in both procedures.

Applicants can get information about the courses for medicine, veterinary, dentistry and pharmacy on the homepage for the nation-wide allocation procedure.

  • What is the difference between a central and a decentral application?

Applications to a course of study in the dialogue-oriented service procedure can be submitted in different ways. Depending on the higher education institution's stipulations this can be done either centrally or decentrally. You find the chosen method for the higher education institution offering your chosen course under the applicationportal of hochschulstart.de.

If you find the link “Apply now on hochschulstart.de” in the detailed view of your chosen course then this indicates a central application submission and you are directly taken to the application mask. If you find the link “Go to higher education institution´s application portal” you have to submit your application decentrally under the application portal of the individual higher education institution. In this case you also have to register with the higher education institution's portal and follow the instructions in the higher education institution's portal.

Either way if you want to submit an application you have to register with the application portal of hochschulstart.de.

    More information is available here.

  • Where should I send my papers to, e.g. certificates?

Please do not send any papers to hochschulstart.de. Information about whether, in which form and within which deadlines the various papers have to be delivered can be obtained directly from the higher education institution.

Higher education institutions often provide detailed information on necessary documents in the detailed descriptions of their courses of study or during the application submission. Please note that each higher education institution individually determines which information and papers are required. Some higher education institutions consider a mere online application to be sufficient, while others demand additional documents in paper form which have to be send to the higher education institution. There is currently no common regulation.

If – in the case of a central application under the application portal of hochschulstart.de – a higher education institution demands an application form then there is an icon next to the application in question under “My applications” in your user account. Use the icon to generate the application form. This form has to be printed and signed and then sent with the necessary papers directly to the higher education institution in question within the defined deadline.

  • There is no information on special requests such as e.g. request for improvement, request for a place due to hardship, request for preferred place of study or second course of study? Can you help me?

In case of questions on special requests please contact the higher education institution in question. Please note that the information on special requests that can be found on the homepage of hochschulstart.de refer to the nation-wide courses of study (medicine, veterinary, dentistry and pharmacy) and not to local admission-restricted courses of study.

  • What does "setting priorities" imply? Till when can I do this?

"Setting priorities" means that applicants order their applications (maximum of twelve) according to their personal preference. The order of the courses of study has no influence on the admission chances and will not be made known to the higher education institutions.

If applicants have not manually set their priorities before the end of the decision phase, then the pre-prioritisation done in the application portal of hochschulstart.de (based on the entrance date of the application) is automatically taken as the basis for coordination phase 2. Setting the priorities manually is possible from the application phase up to the end of the decision phase and cancels the pre-prioritisation. If no personal priority setting is carried out in this time span, then the afore-mentioned pre-prioritisation is valid. Only active applications can be put into order. Potential students participating in the dialogue-oriented service procedure with only one application do not need to manually set the priority; it is automatically given the priority one.

  • What influence does the prioritisation have on my applications in the current procedure?

In coordination phase 2 the priority list is decisive in the selection of the best possible offer of admission. At this point only the realisable offer of admission is presented. All offers of admission or applications with a lower priority are removed from the procedure. Only the best possible offer of admission along with all still open applications with a higher priority remains. In this phase the already existing offer of admission can be replaced by a new offer with a higher priority. If an applicant receives an offer of admission from an application with priority one then it is automatically converted to an admission. In the case of applicants who have not, up to the end of the procedure, received an offer for their application with priority one but have received one with a lower priority then this is now automatically converted to an admission.

  • Till when must I accept an offer of admission and can an offer of admission expire?

Generally you have the possibility of actively accepting an offer of admission up to the end of the procedure (coordination phase 2). Please note that multiple offers of admission remain valid only up to the end of the decision phase.

In coordination phase 2 you will receive an offer of admission for the highest possible priority. This offer can be replaced during this phase by an offer with a higher priority. Possible earlier offers of admission with a lower priority are dispensed with. You can actively accept this offer of admission. If you do not react the offer will be automatically converted to an admission at the end of the procedure. An admission to a course of study not participating in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV) has no affect on the applications in the application portal of hochschulstart.de.

Such applicants with an admission elsewhere will continue to participate in the procedure.

  • What do the various application status mean?

Each application is given an application status. The respective status is shown in the application portal of hochschulstart.de, the portal for courses of study with a local admission restriction. Examples of status are "received", "valid", "withdrawn", "admission offer not currently possible", "excluded". Each applicant should regularly check on the status of their own applications. You can find the meaning of the individual status here or in the user account of the application portal of hochschulstart.de under "my applications". The higher education institutions are solely responsible for the status. For this reason please refer your questions to the appropriate higher education institution.

  • Why do not all applications have the status "valid"?

The status of an application may vary depending on the higher education institution and the stage that the application has reached. The higher education institution is responsible for setting the status "valid" so that the application can participate in the procedure. For further information please contact the higher education institution in question.

  • My application has been preliminarily excluded. What have I done wrong?

The higher education institution determines the requirements for the admission to a place of study as well as the necessary details for the application. It decides whether and which papers must be handed in and by when. The higher education institution also carries out the examination and valuation of the applications or rather the necessary application papers to be handed in and thus is solely responsible for the application status. Therefore you should address your concern regarding your preliminarily excluded application directly to the higher education institution in question.

  • If my application has the status "admission offer not currently possible", have I been refused by the higher education institution?

If your application has the status "offer of admission not possible at present", then the higher education institution cannot at the moment offer an admission. This status can, in the course of the procedure, change to your advantage.

  • What do I have to adhere to in the various phases?

    Application phase

In this phase you can, after you registered, apply for courses of study. After admitting several applications you can order them according to your personal preference by setting the priorities.

    Coordination phase 1

Here the higher education institutions broadcast their ranking lists for the existing applications. You might possibly receive more than one offer of admission from the higher education institutions. If you receive an offer of admission you can decide whether to accept it or to wait for further offers. If you accept an offer, then you receive an admission and you, with all your applications, are withdrawn from the procedure.

    Decision phase

In this phase you have the possibility of accepting an existing offer of admission or taking part in coordination phase 2. In the decision phase this is your last chance to set the priorities of your applications.

    Coordination phase 2

Here the best possible admission will be determined for you using your personal priority list. It is possible that multiple offers of admission were received in coordination phase 1. Of these only one remains in this phase. This is the current best possible offer of admission.

At the end of coordination phase 2 the present offer of admission is automatically converted to an admission. If you cannot be given any offer then you receive a notification of refusal.

    Clearing procedure

Two clearing procedures are carried out in order to allocate places that are still free. In these procedures places not yet taken are allocated by drawing lots. If you want to participate in this procedure you have to again apply for a place of study using the application portal of hochschulstart.de. A registration renewal is not necessary as long as you are in possession of a user account in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV). The higher education institutions independently determine whether and with which courses they are participating in the clearing procedure. Applicants who can be admitted receive a notification of admission.

Notifications of refusal are not sent out in the clearing procedure.

If a course of your choice is not participating in the clearing procedure then please contact the higher education institution directly to find out if possibly a local drawing of lots will be carried out.

  • I have accepted the wrong offer of admission by mistake. Can I cancel it?

The acceptance of an admission offer cannot be reversed. A reset to the previous status is not possible. After accepting an offer of admission you withdraw from the procedure completely and all remaining applications in the procedure are removed.

  • I have asked for a deferment by mistake. How can I cancel the deferment?

It is not possible to cancel an already requested deferment in the application portal of hochschulstart.de. Please refer in this case directly to the appropriate higher education institution and ask whether there is a possibility for cancelling the deferment outside of the dialogue-oriented service procedure.

  • I cannot find my notification of refusal. How can I find it?

Your application and the notification of refusal are available in your user account at hochschulstart.de. Because the current procedure is preset you should, after logging in, select under "Select a service procedure" the procedure for which you have applied and then press the button "Display". By doing this the application and the notification of refusal in PDF format will be displayed. You can view and print the notification.
