Recognition of an admission restriction

What is a local admission restriction?

If the demand for places of study exceeds the number available at a particular higher education institution then the course (professional) will normally be admission-restricted. Only a restricted number of applicants qualifying for a place of study can actually be offered a place. This is also known as numerus clausus (restricted admission) or in the short form NC.

If there is no admission restriction then it is a so-called "admission free" course of study that you can matriculate for at the higher education institution, or it is a course of study with an aptitude statement. In the case of the ascertainment of a particular aptitude the higher education institution can make the admission dependent on proof of special knowlegde or ability.

Local is an admission restriction when it only applies to a particular course at a particular higher education institution. This is the normal case. Only the courses for medicine, veterinary, dentistry and pharmacy are nation-wide restricted (here there is a special application procedure).

The particular higher education institution´s portals and information databank such as provide information as to whether your chosen course falls into the category of a course of study with first professional qualification with local admission restriction. If you discover that your chosen course is admission free then please inform yourself directly at the higher education institution.
